A Second Vacancy
This Is Going To Be Bush’s Legacy
"Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who oversaw the high court's conservative shift and presided over the impeachment trial of President Clinton, died Saturday evening. He was 80 years old and had spent 33 years on the Supreme Court."
"Rehnquist's death opens a rare second vacancy on the nation's highest court and gives President Bush, whose election Rehnquist helped decide, an opportunity shape the makeup of the court for years to come"

As I watched the Katrina coverage last night, a news alert popped us informing me of the death of William Rehnquist. This is going to be why people are going to remember this President. This is going to be Bush’s legacy. Appointing two judges on the Supreme Court. Of course the libs will go crazy, they will complain, they will desperately search for evidence that suggest even the most radical of claims. Even though Rehnquist was a conservative, even though he didn’t agree with Roe vs Wade, the left is going to denounce this appointee simply because he was appointed by this President. And I believe this President will come through. He’s already received heat from some on the right for the Roberts nomination, nominating someone to the court who isn’t a strong conservative to replace Rehnquist doesn’t seem likely.

He will have a multi-faceted legacy. Juxtaposed against the prior administration, the differences are startling.
Souter.
Bush should appoint a conservitive, I don't see why there is any debate on that. The two most liberal judges on the bench are the two appointed by Clinton. There is nothing wrong with that. Clinton should've appointed liberals without conservitives whining (I don't remember it happening so I'm not sure if any did), and Bush should appoint conservitives without liberals whining. Infortunately, the liberals will whine and will probably try to get Ruth Bader Ginsberg appointed as the new cheif justice. I personally would like to see Clarence Thomas take that spot.
If Ginsberg gets it ... *shudder*
It's a double edged emotion ... Rehnquist's death was sad, but it's like ... HECK YES, GEORGE!!! APPOINT ANOTHER!!!
Clarence Thomas as the new Chief Justice? Are you KIDDING ME?
Justify that, please.
that is a heck of a prediction there Morrison... you think the Democrats will question his pick? Seriously, it is the job of the minority to question the majority in cases such as this (appointments) since they are defending their side. I don't see what the big problem is?
Oh, and as far Clinton goes... doesn't anyone realize that Clinton did sit down with key Republicans before putting out any names to work with them? Orrin Hatch supported both Clinton picks...
Or is the feeling here that when you run the government you don't have to concern yourself with the other half of the country...
Just remember, power is fleeting in DC and when the tables are turned such comments and thoughts will be hated by the right...
I say he should put Scalia as chief justice, and nominate a hard-lining originalist.
No one better start up any feminist or racist talk should Bush decide to pick a white man.
Doesnt matter who Bush picks... Bush gets blamed for farting the wrong way.
Justify Thomas? Easy. Just to make liberals hold their breathe until they turn purple and die.
