  • Bush Addresses Nation



    WASHINGTON - President Bush asserted Sunday night the United States is winning the war in Iraq but acknowledged setbacks and the doubts of some "that the war is lost and not worth another dime or another day." He pleaded with Americans to ignore "defeatists who refuse to see that anything is right."

    - What is funny is that the left (and right) complains that Bush never talks to the nation. So when Bush does talk to the nation. Then he just making 4 speeches in 6 days and covering "no new ground".

    - Why is it that leftist such as yourself, antidesi101, can repeat the empty and false accusation of "bush lies" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again- YOURSELF COVERING NO NEW GROUND, just hammering your outright lie that Bush lies [heck it's even in your little picture - isn't that cute?];
    Yet if bush goes on the stump, actively debunking the leftist mythology, suddenly he's covering no new ground?

    Tell me, truly, in your picture you have a piece of paper that says "Bush Lies" printed on it:
    - Do you care to provide factual evidence to back up your "common misconseptions" oh excuse me, ehem "common sense" that proves bush a liar?
    --> I'll accept direct proof and exact statements instead of broad unprovable generalizations thanks.

    Seriously, I'm getting tired of the whole Bush lies debate. Yes it is a very trite expression to say and really it has no meaning at all to me anymore since its been said over and over again. I was looking at the picture from theantidesi and I said to myself, "not this again." And most of the people who do say that kind of stuff end up sounding like moonbats.

  • I'm glad he's finally starting to admit all of the stuff that has gone wrong with this war, but in the end it just seemed like a mostly just political counter attack on those who have launched attacks against him that have been for mostly political reasons. So it definately did not have enough meaning to justify delaying Family Guy 15 minutes.

    I didn't say to "agree" with them, I said respect their position. One must be able to separate the person and their values from their position. The position is what will be debated, which are merely ideas and opinions about the facts. Facts, of course, are not debatable, but must first be agreed upon by both parties. That's going to require you to attain some human skills. If you had your opposer's life experience, you'd sound just like him, right? Can you respect that?

    What is that supposed to prove? OMG, of all the professors I could have chosen, I got this weirdo.

    Son, is respect a part of your life experience, your studies or your environment? I sense a lack of usage.

    Oh sure, I am a Democrat. Here's the dictionary definition.

    Yes I can, but I give it only to people and things I agree with. I consider myself to be an independent thinker and when I see that something is "wrong, wrong, wrong", I know that they are not worthy of my respect.

    Son, I'd like to continue our discussion of respect, but there is little time left. Respect is a basic requirement in debate and is not always available as a character trait. I suggest that you avoid debate for a while and just indulge in some athletic activity. No problem, though, I'll be glad to recommend you for a remedial course, if you like. Oh yes, here's a refund.

    A peek at a Democrat's diary.

    Dear Diary:
    I've been crying all night. Everybody is saying we lost the election, but I don't believe it. Those nasty Reps must have cheated more than we did. I tried so hard to do what the party told me to do.

    In Ohio, I registered and submitted votes for, "Mary Poppins" and "Dick Tracy". I riled up the black community by telling them that Reps were "racists"; I also did what I could to get felons to vote and lied about the economy and "W"'s military service. It didn't work.

    Since the election, I tried yelling "W" acted too swiftly; then I yelled "W" acted too slowly; I yelled "illegal war"; I yelled about Halliburton; I yelled about Cheney; I yelled about "stem cells"; I yelled about "W" ruining the economy by his tax cuts; I stopped yelling when the economy took off.

    So the party has advised me to steal a tactic that I had actually poo-pooed when the Reagan administration proposed it. Remember "just say no" ? Well, all of us Dems have decided that we will just say no to everything that "W" says, does or wants.

    We will say no to any judge he nominates. We will say no to any of his cabinet members, his chiefs of staff and to all of his advisors. We will not acknowledge successes by our troops, the incredible progress by the Iraqis, Condi's truly effective work as a real Sec. Of State and the amazing economic recovery.

    We will keep doing this rather than put forward any position of our own. We will insist that we have values (not the traditional values that lost us the election, but "better" values like give-away programs to the chronically dependent.)

    We will continue to yell that we support the troops but do everything we can to discourage them from succeeding; We will keep yelling for our right of "free speech" to "speak out" against the administration and our country even though it may be helpful to our enemies. We will never, never accept that our carping in a time of war is truly traitorous.

    When the Reps call us on that, we will yell that we are more "patriotic" than they are. I have learned how to do that even though my dislike for the military is clear in all that I say and do. I will try to hide my lack of loyalty to my country and to its flag.

    I will have to practice how to do all of this while maintaining an air of elitism and self-righteousness - all while our party chairman, Dean, makes comments that are undignified, inane and self-destructive.

    I'm tired, Dear Diary. I will end for tonight. But I will say my prayers. I will bless our party angels in the sequence of their Heavenly qualities:
    God bless George Soras and MoveOn.org, first. Without his determined efforts to convert our system to socialism and his millions dedicated to defeating "W" we would have no party at all.

    God bless all of our astute and philosophical sages - Hillary, Jackson, Kennedy, Schumer, Pelosi, Sharpton, Reid, Farakhan, Moore, Kerry, Dean, Gore, and all the rest of our primary moaners, groaners and wailers. Amen.

    I've worked so hard to make "W" appear to be a dunce and I've yelled often about Karl Rove being like Hitler. Darn it, that Rove guy keeps beating us at our own game. The war is now only about how the Iraqis are succeeding at the difficult job of making themselves a free nation. I can only keep wishing that they will fail and we can blame "W". Hmmm, does hoping that we lose in Iraq make me look too much like an un-American, unpatriotic, cowardly dolt?

    No matter how hard I try, I still can't get myself to say something good about this country. I hope that doesn't give away the fact that I am not a patriot. Maybe no one will notice.

    How come, Josh? You are very good at it.

    Well, I like debating but I can't seem to change anybody's mind.

    Josh, debate will not serve you well if that's your goal.

    What do you mean?

    Debating is a competition and it is only a tool. You win by using it more effectively than your opponent. It's not necessarily a personal point of view. You may be asked to represent the opposer's position from time to time.

    Well, sir, I know that! I want to use my debating skills to convince others that I am right. Your "tool" reference escapes me.

    OK, let's look at the lawyer. He uses certain tools (research, strategies, etc.) to counter and refute the other side's arguments. He deals with "how" and "what" of the case. He's not usually concerned with the "why" aspect since he and his opposer have the very same desire - only to win. He doesn't really try to change his opponent's mind. He wants only to seem credible to a jury he has participated in selecting. Does he attain justice? Not necessarily. His tools are used only for "winning" over the other lawyer.
    Not that there's anything wrong with that!

    Now if it is human behavior you want to change then your strategy will have to be different, Josh, although you'll be able to make good use of your debating skills.

    How so?

    Begin an "internal debate".

    Are you kidding?

    No, debate yourself. Ask lots of "why" questions. Have a lengthy session with that little voice that you usually talk to. It's not as easy as it sounds, but it is well worth the effort.
    Look at those things that you've come to believe, then examine why you believe them. Are you seeking the approval of others? Is it that you feel a need to identify with a group? Has peer pressure or blind loyalty given you your present beliefs? Seek answers to questions like that, Josh.

    Sir, with all due respect, what in the world does that get me?

    That process of self-examination, if done honestly, will result in self-change.

    What's the point in that? It's other people I want to change, not me!

    I understand. In a world full of miracles, it's hard to imagine that we have come to believe that there are none. The magic is that when you change, Josh - everything changes.
