Bush Picks Roberts For Chief
"President Bush today nominated John Roberts to succeed William H. Rehnquist as chief justice, and called on the Senate to confirm him before the Supreme Court opens its fall term on Oct. 3."

"The swift move would promote to the Supreme Court's top job a newcomer who currently is being considered as one of eight associate justices."

HECK YES!
The most junior member of the court is responsible for a variety of obnoxious tasks, such as opening the door when the justices are in private talks. Its a bit amusing to think of the Chief Justice himself doing that kind of thing...
I think Bush should appoint one of the current conservitives as cheif justice. Appointing a newcomer all the way to the top is unecesary.
yawn... and how does one get really excited about this? If you are on the left, you are happy that it isn't Scalia in which they know is a hardliner... at least now, it does open up the idea of looking more in to the thoughts of Roberts...
Italini- most of the Chiefs were appointed straight to the job rather than make their way up... plus being as young as he is, he will be there for a long while...
If Kennedy, Stevens, Souter, and O'Connor were any hint to presidents... YOU CAN'T TRUST A NEWCOMER TO ACTUALLY BE CONSERVATIVE!!! Bush is putting a LOT of faith in a newcomer to lead the court, expecially after his father picked David Souter, another lib thought to be conservative.
Yup...
Thomas would be the more astute pick in my opinion. Mainly because Bush's top choice, Scalia, could never, EVER be confirmed. This might make the liberals even pissier about the confirmation. He looks to be O.K., a economic conservative and a social moderate, better than Scalia or Thomas, but the real problem will be confirmation. Even thought there are no legitamate reasons to block him, the liberals will claim his lack of experience should preculde him from taking the seat.
I don't understand why people insist Scalia would never be confirmed. He was unanimous when he got onto the court, so I really don't buy this "never be confirmed" attitude people put up.
dude, i dont like it. im not obligated to give u any reasons, and do u kno y? cuz theyre personal. either way, ive never been to a country where people r so stupid, ignorant and oblivious to the rest of the world. its just an annoying country, and i dont like the administration and 80% of the people. it that offends u, so be it. i dont give a flying fuck.
u should really try traveling, then maybe ud understand where im coming from.
and for future reverence, what america has done for the rest of the world has nothing to do with the fact that i dont like it here. and uhm, yeaaah, it makes a huge difference which administration did those things..cuz im talkin bout that i dont like it HERE, NOW.
I was hoping for Thomas.
Again I remind you. SudanLM: if you don't like it then live someplace else. If that is your attitude we don't want you here anyway.
SudanLM-
I think you meant "future REFERENCE",not "reverence". (Lol),you don't seem to like America, but I can tell you've partaken of our educational system!
Mike
I am disappointed and concerned with Bush's pick of Roberts to be Chief Justice. I think he should've gone with Thomas or Scalia, two PROVEN conservatives. You were only 1 when the Dems tried every dirty trick in the book to thwart Thomas coming to the court, but I remember it very well, and for THAT reason I wish Bush would've went with THOMAS. Oh,well.
Thomas or Scalia would have been my pick.

Hi Morrison - thanks for the use of your hall.
Most people sell "W" short. His team of advisors are the best. He is applying some incredible psychology in his strategy. He puts in Roberts Chief Justice now because he already has enough votes for confirmation.
He then will select another conservative to fill O'Conner's seat. It will be either a gal (from Louisiana!) or Gonzales (minority). When the Dems go nuts and start their ranting and filibustering, they will run into the "Gang of 14".
These are the patriots who promised to not allow a partisan filibuster and if one is attempted, they will vote for the appointee. It's going to be very interesting to watch.
God bless America.
angel,
yepp...another one of ur countries shortcomings.
