  • Bush Picks Miers!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - "President George W. Bush on Monday nominated a member of his inner circle, White House counsel Harriet Miers, for a Supreme Court vacancy, choosing a woman with plenty of legal experience but who is not a judge to replace the retiring Sandra Day O'Connor."

"Miers, 60, a longtime ally of Bush's going back to his days as Texas governor, would be the third woman ever to serve on the Supreme Court. The others are O'Connor and a current justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg."

  • now Bush has packed the court like no one ever before...taking back the judicial brance...one Supreme Court justice at a time

  • So, I guess this means that since he's nominating a woman that the Democrats "but he's sexist!" argument won't work this time. They always have the race card to play though.........

  • for some reason I thought some here would be upset over her qualifications or the fact that she has been a lifelong Democrat...

  • I haven't looked up stuff on her yet, so I can't say anything about her.

  • I would hardly call the nomination of Miers "court packing."
Nevertheless, this confirmation process looks to become extremely interesting.

  • It is difficult to gauge this nominee being that we do not have much to go on other than her prior Democratic leanings. At first glance, she appears to be a moderate of some sort.  One thing that does cause me to hesitate, however, is Harry "Chinagate" Reid's glowing acceptance of her.   That may very well be a cause for concern.

  • we also know she has never been a judge

  • She basically has no qualifications other than the fact she is a woman and she knows Bush.  If this nomination doesn't go through, maybe Bush will appoint his girl friend from high school.

  • There are a good number of former Democrats serving in Congress as Republicans. Why, I do believe there are a large number of former Democrats voting GOP these days too!

  • and in other news...
    delay indicted.
    AGAIN

  • "we also know she has never been a judge"

Well being a SC judge is drastically different from being a regular judge, so as long as they're knowledgable in the law then shouldn't matter much whether or not they were a judge previously.

Personally,as a Conservative I am quite concerned about her. Was there no one better(from MY viewpoint)?

  • Mier is "perfect". The libs have been outwitted by "W" the man whom they say is witless. The libs have in Mier, their worst nightmare: an evangelical Christian, a conservative, a dear friend of "W", Cheney and Rove. Just keep right on being totally unaware of their incredible ability to play the Dems like a harp!
    God bless America.

  • TheJayBaileyShow: She basically has no qualifications other than the fact she is a woman and she knows Bush.

Hey, it worked for "Brownie" with FEMA. Oh, wait....

Qualifications? Bah! If she's judged an Arabian horse show, she's a slam dunk!

...and if Bill Clinton had nominated someone with her qualifications, would you have been equally impressed with his ability to "outwit" the cons and the Repubs? For some reason I suspect some members of the right might cry foul over Democratic cronyism and patronage.

  • Mier is so perfect that she is being attacked by the right in the most convincing way... let me guess, this is part of the plan, right? boymarine, does it ever hurt your back on much spin you must put on things to fit in your little world?

  • Never a judge, no formal education on constitutional law [which at least roberts could establish], and her only experience as a public service before being a white house hack was being a member of dallas city concil [during the same years the murder rate went up] and a chairwoman on the texas lottery commission from 95-2001 [which was created 15 years ago to fund the education budget; hasn't since it started]. And that's everythings that's all in the open. Imagine what will be dug up in the weeks to come. Can't wait to see you play the "liberal's don't want a woman on bench" card.

  • She was the first president of the Dallas and Texas BAR... she has been a close friend (or in her words admirer) of President Bush for a number of years and considers himself "the smartest man" she "has ever known..."

She is conservative, I don't doubt that... it was a smart stealth move by Bush (read: Cheney) since if the Democrats oppose Bush can pull out someone who is more overtly in line with what some of the conservatives want and if the Democrats let it go through then he gets what he wants on the bench... it does reek of cronyism but so what... there is more to her than what has been "discovered" thusfar... trust me... as soon as it was announced the conservo-blogs and pundits went nuts screaming about Bush lying and not supporting the conservative views... more than a few vowed to defect to the libertarians or not donate to any party associated with Bush... by late this afternoon some of the wingnut groups were asking people to "not doubt the choice" and just wait to see that this will be the SCOTUS appointment that will set the legacy for Bush... in other words, methinks that some of these groups have been given marching orders...

For those that think that Abortion will be gone... think again... no matter how repulsed the GOP may say abortion is, they know it is the strongest wedge issue they have... I am not saying this to start a fight or question the morals of the GOP... knowing political operatives and their motives is enough to make me question that abortion is on the extinction list...

  • This is very interesting. I can't wait to see what happens.

  • Bill Krystal's comments were a little over the top. Seems he was demoralized. Texan's will have her stretched over a fireant mound confessing everything she knows soon...so bring on those hearings. I'm sure the rest of the country wants to know.
